Meetings NYSA holds meetings, from time to time, on the second Wednesday of the month. We are pleased to announce that NYSA will be presenting a talk by Steven Bellovin on October 13th. Bellovin received a B.A. degree from Columbia University, and an M.S. and Ph.D. in Computer Science from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. While a graduate student, he helped create netnews; for this, he and the other perpetrators were award the 1995 Usenix Lifetime Achievement Award. He joined AT&T Bell Laboratories in 1982. Despite the fact that he has not changed jobs, he is now at AT&T Labs Research, working on networks, security, and why the two don't get along, as well as related public policy questions. He is an AT&T Fellow and a member of the National Academy of Engineering. Bellovin is the co-author of ``Firewalls and Internet Security: Repelling the Wily Hacker'', and holds several patents on cryptographic and network protocols. He has served on many National Research Council study committees, including those on information systems trustworthiness, the privacy implications of authentication technologies, and cybersecurity research needs; he was also a member of the information technology subcommittee of an NRC study group on science versus terrorism. He was a member of the Internet Architecture Board from 1996-2002; he is currently the co-director of the Security Area of the IETF. TOPIC "Realistic Security" Many security systems fail, not for technical reasons but because they fail to take into account the way people really use computers. A realistic security policy may not be the theoretical best; in the real work, though, it's likely to do far better. We present some examples of things that have been done wrong in the past, along with suggestions for improvement. LOCATION Sun Microsystems Inc

with a subject line of Due to a scheduling problem, Edward Eigerman's presentation, "Mac OS X and its history on the desktop and server" has been postponed. A new date will be schudled. TOPIC Edward Eigerman will be speaking about Mac OS X, Apple's state of the art Unix-based operating system. He will be going over the history of OS X, both on the desktop and as a server OS, it's relationship to UNIX and the open source community. He will be discussing current and future versions of the operating systems and Apple's current hardware product line. SPEAKER Ed is a Senior Systems Engineer for Apple Computer. He works with Apple's corporate customers in the New York and New Jersey area to investigate and implement Apple technology. Prior to coming to Apple in 2001 he was a IT manager for Hearst Magazines. He has over 15 years of experience as a technology implementer and manager. |
